TWIN TOWERS

I started this painting the week after September 11th, 2001 to help overcome my anger and to Honor The Fallen. I struggled with it for some time and finally had to put it away. As this year marks the 5th anniversary
of that fateful day I decided I would pull it out finish the painting. On Memorial Day 2006 I painted the final stroke.

The painting is acrylic on 24x36" stretched Belgian linen. I used the image of a NYC firefighter and a police officer to represent the World Trade Center
Twin Towers. The police officer is with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. I chose the PAPD since they were responsible for law enforcement and security at the World Trade Center. The number 343 on the firefighters helmet represents the number of brothers lost that day. On the police officer's collar is 37 representing the number of PAPD officers who also died that day. NYPD lost 23 of its officers as well. If you look closely you will see all the names in the smoke. Emotionally, this was the most difficult part of the painting, 403 names in all. There are many combinations of father and sons as well as brothers included on that list of names. It is very common for police and firefighters children and siblings of to follow the same career path. Many of them made the ultimate sacrifice.
